This year the Leading to Reading Committee is trying something new and we need your support.
The mission of LTR is to get books into the hands of local children who might not be fortunate enough to have access to many books. Therefore, we have partnered with Barnes and Noble in Poughkeepsie for an event on April 10th. To help, all you have to do is shop! Bring the voucher you see here (or received in email) or pick one up that day at Barnes & Noble from one of the LTR committee members. When you show it at check-out, a percentage of your purchase will be donated to AAUW for LTR. You may shop at www.bn.com using the same Bookfair ID # 10164317.
As an added bonus, between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm on April 10th, we will have volunteers reading to young children and story tellers weaving tales for the older kids. It should be a fun day.

The first reunion for girls who attended the Live Your Dream Girls’ Conference in 2008 and 2009 was held on March 12.
Our thanks to Bethany Hamilton who gave a workshop on using media with “wisdom.” The girls were treated to pizza and ice cream and had a chance to reconnect, play games and discuss communication. We are planning a second reunion - a spring brunch and if you would like to assist contact Marcine at aauwgirls@gmail.com.

In a recent conversation with my mother’s priest, a Nigerian clergyman, I learned that more women than men are attending universities in Nigeria. However, there are no jobs upon graduation. The consequence is many people tend to follow a life of crime. When I pressed for women's education in rural areas, he told me that there are no statistics but agreed with me that probably there are very few rural women furthering their education. He also lamented the terrible strife between Christians and Muslims.

Lula Allen
Lula joined our branch in 2007. Since then she has been active on the Diversity Committee, and worked on the 2008 Conference on Diversity. She enjoys attending the Gourmet Out & About dinners as well as the Monthly Programs. Her other activities involve volunteering at The Poughkeepsie Daycare Center. This year she is being recognized for her leadership as chairperson for the Spring Writer's Tea. Lula is pleased to be working with a very talented group of women on this important event.
Marcine Humphrey
After retiring from teaching, Marcine joined AAUW in 2003. Anyone familiar with the highly successful РLive Your Dreams Girls' ConferenceП will know of the outstanding leadership Marcine has provided. During its 5th year, she is serving as co-coordinator and notes that she "does not do this alone" and has been "fortunate to have worked with some pretty awesome women." Marcine has also worked on the Diversity Committee, the 2008 Conference on Diversity, and continues to serve on the Equity for Life Committee. You will also recognize Marcine as the current Public Policy Chair and she has enjoyed keeping our members informed on national initiatives and events. She wants everyone to know that "the best part of AAUW is the new friends I have made! As a member of AAUW, I have gained so much!"
Bergie Lebovitch
The Poughkeepsie Branch isn't big enough for the recruiting talents of Bergie Lebovitch! A member for 4 years, and for the last 2 years, she not only serves as our own Membership VP, but has expanded her horizons to serve at the state level as well. Thanks in large part to the efforts of Bergie, we continue to increase our membership at an impressive rate... 307 and counting! Bergie feels that the camaraderie and commitment of the AAUW members in making our world a better place for all women and girls, has made and continues to make The Poughkeepsie Branch of the AAUW, Inc. the number ONE Branch in the COUNTRY!
Margaret Ruggeri
Margaret left the area several years ago to settle in an assisted living facility near her son in the Schenectady area. Despite her distance, she continues to remain a loyal member and to keep up with our activities via The Branch. She commented that "you are doing a lot!" We are honoring Margaret for her continued interest and support. Her actions show that she “walks the walk” when it comes to living the values of AAUW. Some of you may remember reading about Margaret when she reached her 50th AAUW anniversary, and heard about her efforts to encourage her former home health aide to further her education. I am pleased to report that in 3 months, Margaret’s health aid will receive her RN. Congratulations to Margaret for being a champion of higher
education and an inspiration to others.

After what seems like endless winter with event cancellations, piles of snow and power outages, the longer days and warmer sunshine are so very welcome. Our lavish spring Writers’ Tea promises to be a wonderful way to begin the season. Lula Allen, Mary Coiteux, and their hard-working committee are having fun meeting the authors, planning the delectables, arranging things at Locust Grove, and getting their pictures taken for the newspaper! There are some exciting silent auction items ( look for something hand-made, soft and gray with silver thread) and there will be beautifully decorated tables ( with Roseville and forsythia, maybe even pussy willows) to share with your friends. Some are reserving a full table for ten; many are coming on their own or with a spouse. Either way, the committee is making sure all will feel comfortable and will enjoy the day. Don’t forget to make your reservation with Saranne Ratner by April 5th.
Our next spring event will be our annual meeting and dinner where our branch celebrates our achievements for the year and gets to meet the new officers. A delicious dinner at Christo’s is being planned by Sue Osterhoudt and her committee. A special guest, Anne Constantinople, retired psychology professor at Vassar College, will speak to us on insights she has gained from her studies of philanthropy in America.
So, plan to share your spring with your friends at AAUW. That’s always where the “action” is!

Equal Pay Day is April 20, 2010
"Pay Gap = Women at a Discount”
With all the wonderful activities planned for AAUW Poughkeepsie this April, it might be easy to forget Equal Pay Day.
Idaho's House of Representatives has unanimously passed a bill requiring the state to recognize "Equal Pay Day" each year. The bill was introduced by Rep. Anne Pasley-Stuart (D-Boise) in hopes of bringing attention to the continued wage gap between men and women. Way to go Idaho!
The U.S. Department of Labor Statistics data would be used to determine exactly what day will be considered "Equal Pay Day." As a means to demonstrate pay inequity, the day is set to change each year based upon the amount of days it takes a woman to earn as much as a man during the previous year.
According to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the gap between men's and women's median earnings widened slightly between 2007 and 2008, from 78 percent to 77 percent for full-time, year-round workers. Because women earn less, on average, than men, they must work longer to receive the same amount of pay. In recognition of this inequity, Equal Pay Day will be marked on Tuesday, April 20, 2010.
Please do not forget this symbolic day when women's wages catch up to men's wages from the year before.
One year out of college, women working full time already earn less than their male colleagues, even when they work in the same field. Ten years after graduation, the pay gap widens.
TAKE ACTION! Fair Pay is even more critical today, not simply to family economic security but also to the nation's economic recovery. Urge your senators to take the next critical step in the fight for pay equity by quickly passing the Paycheck Fairness Act (S.182).
Support Responsible Education About life (REAL) Act (H.R. 1551/s.611)
This bill authorizes Federal funds for state to offer comprehensive, age-appropriate, and medically accurate sexual education in the schools. The REAL Act is a comprehensive approach to sex education that promotes abstinence but includes information about contraception. The bill encourages family communication and teaching young people the skills to make responsible decisions about sexuality, and explore components of a healthy relationship.
There are currently three separate federal programs to fund abstinence-only-until-marriage programs, there remains no federal funding specifically for comprehensive sex education. Become a “two minute” activist today! Visit www.aauw.organd click on Advocacy and Take Action.

Have you ever noticed that the older you get the faster the time goes??? It’s time to think about renewing again. The dues are remaining at $75.00 for the year. Again, $62.00 of that is tax deductible. For any of you who have joined March 15, 2010 and forward to June 30th, you do NOT have to renew until next year (2011). The rest of us, must renew by May 30th-Why??? This year, we have 3 free memberships “up for grabs” from those who get their dues into Liz Moesel by May 30th! LITERARY NOTES - Short Story Authors

Our struggling world is filled with women who are mothers....and, in many situations, mothers maintain their inner strength and their nurturing even as their bodies, their families and their communities are torn apart. Two excellent short story writers, Colm Toibin and Jayne Ann Phillips, focus their small literary gems upon mothers as central characters.
Both Toibin (pronounced "toe-bean"), an Irishman, and Phillips, a woman from West Virginia, are notably sensitive writers who explore their maternal characters' ability to handle loneliness, shame, illness, and losses with generosity and grace. Their adult children try to hold on...and to move on...with uncertainty and beautifully portrayed regret. Their mothers are often quietly strong and effective, no matter how frail.
Colm Toibin has been a novelist, journalist and playwright, and "Mothers and Sons" is his first collection of short stories. He has written about people at different pivotal moments in their lives, and he believes that the relationships between mothers and their sons reveal something unique and important about them. Toibin grew up in a diversified family, in which his parents spoke in a different language from his. He has claimed in interviews that he learned to pick up the tone in conversations...i.e., where things that were not said were most important. "One Minus One", and "A Priest In The Family" are two especially fine stories in Toibin's collection: melancholy in tone, a mother's strength and grace only indirectly apparent (but undeniable), and a son's regrets poignantly portrayed.
Jayne Ann Phillips was writing prolifically in her twenties, and she had the admiration of great writers such as Tillie Olson, Raymond Carver and Nadine Gordimer. Her focus has been on lonely, lost souls, and in "Souveniers," a particularly excellent story (in a collection entitled "Black Tickets"), she has written about a gravely ill mother who needs the help of her son and daughter, yet must--and does--answer their needs instead. Her daughter tries to give what she can via cards and flowers, while her son maintains a "takeover," distant approach. As neither can really take away any of the pain and grief, it is the generous and graceful mother, nearing death, who holds everything together.
I hope that you will have the enriching experience of reading stories by these two talented writers, Toibin and Phillips.

SOLEIL PLANS BROOKLYN BRIDGE WALK

Join us for the Big Onion Walking Tour of The Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn Heights on Saturday, May 1, 2010.
The tour leaves at 1 pm from the edge of City Hall Park and should end by or before 3pm at the Brooklyn Heights promenade.
On this tour, we will cross the Brooklyn Bridge and recount the dramatic story of how it was built. We will stroll the Heights to explore the rich architectural, social and literary history. Stops could include abolitionist Henry Ward BeecherМs Plymouth church, examples of 19th century architecture and sites associated with Walt Whitman, Truman Capote, Arthur Miller and Emily Roebling. 4/22/10 Join an Earth Day Clean up at Mount Beacon from 10am-1pm. It is interesting to note that Mount Beacon is the most visible summit for miles around, providing the defining backdrop for the local communities. Its prominence made the mountain an important factor in the Revolutionary War, when George Washington's troops set signal fires to communicate vital information about British troop movements.
