Mariel Fiori, recipient of the Ippie award for best overall design from the New York Community Media Alliance (see January The Branch) will be speaking both about her periodical, La Voz, as well as her insight into the Hispanic presence in Dutchess County. Mariel founded this Spanish-language news, cultural and arts magazine five years ago. It began as a quarterly and snowballed into a monthly magazine.
Ms. Fiori wishes to clarify misconceptions on both sides and publishes articles by Spanish speakers, both natives and non-natives to the language alike.
Born in Argentina, Ms. Fiori is fluent in Spanish, English and French and has spent time in Spain. She has produced and hosted a radio show, helped make a documentary on Mexican immigrants in the Hudson Valley and served as interpreter for the Poughkeepsie School District. Presently she is working towards her MBA degree at NYU School of Business.

Volunteers are also needed to help at the convention with registration. Most members arrive on Friday afternoon between 12:00 6:00 and we need people to work a two-hour shift at the registration table.

STRENGTHENING OUR CORE THROUGH ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Our AAUW has transformed and grown over the last couple of years. We've become a 501 (c) (3) and we are now the biggest branch in the country! In order to sustain our momentum and optimize all of our resources, we will be developing an organizational blueprint that will help us work together even more effectively on a day to day basis.
We will be working on this blueprint in two separate sessions. The first session will be held during the last week in March and the second in the first week of May 2010. Through thoughtful discussion, a strong sense of camaraderie, and an innate knowledge of common purpose, we will create a set of working rules that will provide organization-wide support to all our members who work tirelessly on behalf of our Branch. It is also our hope that with these working rules, we can offer an even richer organizational experience to all of our members

The Professional Women's Networking Group will focus on offering working members of AAUW a variety of opportunities to build relationships with other professional women. The group will provide a chance for members to learn new business practices, exchange marketing ideas and offer business referral opportunities. We hope to invite informative speakers to meetings, adding an educational component. Recently retired professional women will have the opportunity to meet and mentor newer professional women. Hopefully the group will attract and grow membership of working professional women to the Poughkeepsie Branch of AAUW.
Our first meeting will focus on solidifying the underlying intention of the group.

This coming March 8 marks the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. In celebration Women for Women, founded by Zainab Salwi, daughter of Saddam's chauffeur, is organizing "Join Me on the Bridge" together with the Women's Leadership Alliance and the Dutchess Regional Chamber of Commerce. On March 5there is a 4:30 pm kick-off with an event in the center of the bridge. For further information, please contactwww.womenforwomen.org. This is very much part of the AAUW mission and I urge as many members as possible to walk on that date.

The Leading to Reading project is once again making Fuzzy Friend kits for children in the emergency shelter at The Childrens Home of Poughkeepsie. Each kit consists of two books with reading activities, craft materials, and a stuffed animal to hug. This year were able to provide them in snazzy navy and gold Leading to Reading string bags.
Were asking each interest group to collect SMALL (approximately 8) stuffed animals during your March meeting. They can also be brought to the March general meeting. Many are on sale after Valentines Day or are available at area discount stores. If you need them picked up, please contact Saranne Ratner at 297-9360 orsrteacher@optonline.net. LIVE YOUR DREAM: THE SEQUEL!

The "Reunion," for the girls who attended the Live Your Dream Girls Conference in the fall, is scheduled for
March 12, 2010 from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church in Poughkeepsie on New Hackensack Road. The theme is effective communication. The evening is divided between fun, food, games and discussion about good, safe communication.
We need about 12 women to set up, register the girls, chaperon, assist with initial "craft" activity, pick up and deliver food, lead small group discussions, and brief closing activity. Call either Marcine (485-7697) or Gwen Higgins (452-5931) if you can assist.
Our goal is to bring some of the girls together again and reinforce the themes of self empowerment and sisterhood. We average 20 - 30 girls at these events.
We are moving ahead with planning the 5th Live Your Dream Girls Conference as Equity for Life continues the search for funding. We are requesting that DCC partner with us again in November and are requesting November 6, the first Saturday in November. The event will have the familiar format of an opening, two workshops sessions, a lunch and girl talks. followed by a closing celebration.

Saturday, April 10 will be another special AAUW day. The Leading to Reading project will be featured at a Barnes and Noble Day. Members have volunteered to conduct story hours, do story telling, and demonstrate our now famous assembly lines for making book kits. Barnes and Noble will donate a portion of the proceeds for any purchases made by a supporter of our literacy project.

It is our understanding that the following would be tax-deductible now that Poughkeepsie Branch AAUW, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3). Please verify with your tax consultant.
$62 of our annual dues: $46 (national) + $16 (Poughkeepsie Branch)
All moneys paid to the Poughkeepsie Branch less amounts for which goods or in-kind services were received. (For example, the $12.00 portion of the $50.00 paid for the event at Amicis is tax-deductible. The expenses per person were $38.00.)
Donations of goods and services are tax deductible. Artists may deduct only the cost of materials.

As far as verification of the donation, the IRS requires donors to provide written confirmation from the donee for contributions over $250.00

Mileage
As a nonprofit volunteer organization all Board members can claim volunteer mileage to Board meetings and programs they attend. Other members can claim volunteer mileage for events they are responsible for or for committee meetings they attend. (Interest group attendance would not qualify for volunteer miles.) Participation in any of the Equity for Life community projects: Girls' Conference; Leading to Reading; Start Smart, Diversity events would qualify. With Mapquest it is easy to determine the miles if you have know which meetings and events you attended and drove to. The 2009 rate is 14 cents per mile.
As for the mileage verification, the organization does not have to verify the mileage traveled, the person just has to have a written record. If ever audited they would have to produce proof of those meetings on those dates.

Latest update: Our thermometer show that we have now passed the 25% mark toward our goal of $10,000, with a total of $2525 as of February 1st. A number of our members have already taken advantage of the opportunity to recognize the birthday of a friend or family member by donating in their honor to the DCC Endowed Scholarship Fund.
