LIVE YOUR DREAM: Girls Growing Strong

The fifth “Live Your Dream Girls’ Conference” is scheduled for Saturday, November 6th at Dutchess Community College from 8:30-2:30. Would you like to help? There are jobs that require 2 hours or less and some that have no interaction with the girls. Some involve driving, picking up stuff, and delivering it. Here are just a few of the jobs available:
Outreach: Mail Information packets to organizations that have contact with 7th grade girls. Supply names of individuals and organizations that can hand out registration information. Pick up and deliver packages to schools. Call girls and facilitators with reminder two days before conference (script provided).
Program books:
آ Coordinate program book fundraising. Prepare and send out letters, provide information to women, keep records of ads, forward ads to program book designer.
آ Find sponsors and send the material to the program book coordinator.
آ Work with Margaret Nijhuis on the program book: proofing, pick up books at printer, deliver books to DCC
Facilitation:
آ Seek out potential facilitators and refer them to coordinator
آ Do a workshop (1 hour) or chaperone girls during conference (3-5 hours)
Registration:
آ Redesign existing registration brochure (Publisher experience helps)
آ Drive copies to and from printer
آ Receive registrations via mail and enter them in Excel spreadsheet.
آ Print nametags
آ Staff registration table (1 hour in morning, 1 hour at check-out)
Materials: Decorate and prepare gifts and journals (begin in August - fun and food provided!). Pick up and deliver T-shirts, yoga mats, or similar items (1 hour). Distribute materials during registration and monitor girls during opening activity (2 hours). Shop for cookies and snacks.
Budget: Keep a record of money received and spent
Set up/Clean up - the usual (1 hour)

...are all making their way to young children in the Group Emergency Foster Care Center at The Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie.
Thanks to all who donated cuddly stuffed animals during March, the “Leading to Reading” project is completing “Fuzzy Friend” kits for the children in the center. Each kit contains two books, a stuffed animal, and craft materials. Many of the children were removed quickly from their homes and have few belongings of their own. The kits provide comfort and a sense of belonging for them.
If you forgot to bring a stuffed animal, you have another chance! A basket will be available at the annual dinner on May 11th.
A big THANK YOU goes to our many AAUW supporters!
ANNE CONSTANTINOPLE
We are delighted to have Anne Constantinople as our speaker on May 11th. Dr. Constantinople is a personality and social psychologist by training; she did her undergraduate work at Smith College and earned her PhD from the University of Rochester. After teaching for two years at Bryn Mawr College, she came to Vassar in 1967 hoping to continue the pioneering work initiated by the Mellon Foundation on normal development in the college years. The evidence for the interaction of nature and nurture in development became increasingly compelling; she co-taught a seminar on Gender for many years with a neuroscientist and became a founding member of the American Culture program at Vassar.
In that context, she co-taught several courses on American history and culture, the final one being a seminar on Philanthropy as an expression of American values and beliefs.

There is no higher priority for the American public than the restoration of the economy, and working towards pay equity is a critical step in that direction. Policy makers need to ensure that women workersТall workersТdonМt just survive the downturn but continue the march toward fair pay and workplace opportunity.
Empowering women is one investment that always pays long-term dividends, not only for the women themselves but their families and the entire nation as well. The Paycheck Fairness Act (S.182/H.R.12) is a comprehensive bill that updates the Equal Pay Act of 1963 by taking meaningful steps to create stronger incentives for employers to follow the law, empower women to negotiate for equal pay, and strengthen federal outreach and enforcement efforts.
Passing this legislationТapproved by the House more than a year agoТis the next logical step following the 2009 enactment of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which restored the ability of working women to have their day in court.
Equal Pay is an РEconomic Engine Р and legislation promoting pay equity is especially critical given the current state of the economy, which has shed more than seven million jobs since December 2007.
For the first time in American history, women represent half of the paid workforce, and two-thirds of women are either the primary or co-bread winner for their families. In other words, pay equity is not just a moral issue; it is an economic imperative with enormous implications not just for women but for working families, communities and the nationМs recovery. The impact of the РGreat Recession,П Тduring which the importance of a working womanМs wage has never been higherТhas intensified this trend even further.

Governor Paterson’s 2010-11 Executive Budget represent a38% reduction to Adult Literacy Education (ALE)!! Last year, the Legislature successfully restored some funding for ALE during budget negotiations.
It’s not too late to do it again this year. Join hundreds of
literacy supporters to call our top leaders and tell them to protect adult literacy education services in the State Budget!
The Adult Literacy Education program supports a wide variety not-for-profits, libraries, community and volunteer based organizations statewide to provide adult literacy education services

Many of us are off to the state convention where we will hear inspiring speeches, attend informative workshops, connect with our counterparts from across the state and, maybe if we’re lucky, we’ll also qualify for an award or two again this year. Don’t misunderstand .. convention is not all seriousness. We laugh a lot, enjoy great food, and luxuriate in a beautiful conference setting too.
At our annual meeting on May 11th, we will share some experiences from the convention. Come and join in the fun of celebrating our branch and our achievements at Christo’s. A sumptuous dinner is planned and some surprises too. Our guest speaker, Anne Constantinople, retired Vassar psychology professor, will talk about philanthropy which is a topic she has researched and taught. Given that AAUW is a philanthropic organization, what actually does that mean for our understanding of who we are and what we do as members?
The annual meeting is also a time to welcome our incoming Board members and to wish the outgoing Board farewell. Come and be with us for all the fun!

It’s hard to take time away from work, but now you can combine work and pleasure! The Professional Women’s Networking Group, a new Poughkeepsie AAUW interest group, will focus on offering working members of AAUW a variety of opportunities to build relationships with other professional women.

Really, Really Short Stories.... A Six Word Contest
You can create literary gems of your own, in half a dozen words. Ernest Hemingway was once given the challenge of telling a story in just six words. "Papa" came up with a zinger...."For sale: baby shoes, never worn." Another writer (an aspiring one) expressed her outlook on Life with: " Young, old...Pretty, plain. Only words."
Larry Smith, a book editor, founded an online community, SMITH Magazine (www.smithmag.net), for personal storytelling. He posed a challenge: Could folks tell their life stories in six words? Tens of thousands of people sent in entries, and the six-word memoir made its' debut! Smith and his co-publisher, Rachel Fershleiser, put their favorites in a book, " Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure" (Harper Perennial, 2008).
A few of those published were: “ Nearing sixty. Still on rough draft.,” “Defined at 21. Redefined at 57.," and "Yoga, meditation, workouts. Art. 60. Strong."
We're having a contest. Send a six-word memoir or outlook on Life to Diane Browne- Sterdt (browruf@yahoo.com ) (no "n" in the e-mail address) by May 1st, and if your entry is selected, you (and one runner-up) will win a coffee and dessert delight at Barnes and Noble (Poughkeepsie), to be enjoyed with Diane and Cathy Kinn. It's not the Pulitzer, we know...but it could be a lot of fun!

There will be a combined meeting of the current and the incoming Board members of both the elected and appointed positions on Wednesday, May 5th at 6:00 pm at St. John’s Church. While we enjoy light snacks, we will be discussing AAUW issues in small groups. We hope to encourage new members to begin thinking about their new positions in the upcoming year and to give current Board members the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas about their Board experiences. Board members usually meet informally with their new counterparts one or more times on their own so this will not be a specific “training” event but a more general discussion.
Current Board members may wish to bring their records or other materials to transfer to their counterpart at this meeting. Current Board members, please have your year-end report ready to submit to me at this meeting.

Attention all members! (Except those who joined after Jan.1st of 2010) It’s that time again, when we have to renew our memberships. The Association has kept their fee at $49.00, of which $46.00 is tax deductible, the State remains at $10.00 and the Fabulous Poughkeepsie Branch is still a bargain at $16.00, also tax deductible. The renewal forms and most newly executed profile sheets will be in the mail by April 30th. It is essential that EVERYONE fill out the personal profile sheet so we will be able to better serve your needs. Please return your profile with your renewal.
This year we have decided to “sweeten the deal” by offering three free National memberships to those who have renewed by May 30th. These three $49.00 refund checks will be awarded after a drawing at the June 2nd Programming Meeting. We’re making it a little more enticing by offering you three chances if you get your renewal in by May 10th; two chances if by May 20th; and one chance by May 30th! (Liz Moesel will be receiving your renewals, and if you are having a financial institution make a direct payment-PLEASE MAKE THEM AWARE that Liz’s name and address must appear on the envelope)
Our “little” Branch is now at 316 members!!!! Number 1 in the State, and currently remaining Number 1 in the Country, in the Member get a Member Campaign. To maintain our status, nationally, we need MORE referrals from you ASAP! We definitely have competition from a branch south of us...(and we need another plaque to “house”!!!!)
Thirty-six members have brought in 77 members since July 1stof last year and they will be honored at the Annual Meeting on May 11th. Check out the two names with an asterisk (*) below and learn of the fantastic story behind them at the Annual Meeting.
According to the National Data Base of the AAUW, we in Poughkeepsie have a few celebrations of longevity milestones. Please join us at the Annual Meeting to honor Elizabeth (Betty) Smith for her 45 years, as she becomes an Honorary Branch Member. Additionally, we have Cynthia Averill, Marjorie DiDonato, Diane Sipos, and Ann Wade who are also celebrating 25 years with the Poughkeepsie Branch. Just think about all that these women have done for our Branch and their tireless efforts on behalf of all women and girls. Thank you all for all that you have done and will continue to do for AAUW.
