Live Your Dream Girls' Conference A Success!

On Saturday November 1, 2008 the 3rd Live Your Dream Girls' Conference took place at Dutchess Community College, Poughkeepsie NY. See slideshow.

Project Runway came to Dutchess County and young women were challenged to take a closer look at the effects of lyrics. Girls were empowered to explore and develop their creativity and self-expression and redefine beauty on their own terms. Some were lucky as they started the day with a Yoga class!

Girls attended two 55 minute workshops. After lunch, they were divided into groups for a "Girl Talk" led by area professionals. It was no surprise that they loved the "Girl Talks," and said, "Yes!" they would like to participate in more!

Our mission is to strengthen confidence and help girls form a vision for their future. This event is modeled on the AAUW "Sister to Sister" summits held throughout the country. Professional women in the Hudson Valley donated their time and talents for the conference. Over 25 AAUW women participated either that day or behind the scenes preparing materials.

Providing seventh grade girls a one of a kind, embellished journal, the focus was on writing as a path to self discovery "Sisterhood" was emphasized by closing with a poem "I am My Sister's Keeper."

When asked what they learned responses included: "girls have a lot of power in a lot of ways," "... to respect and express myself, and to respect others," ... to not "be afraid to express yourself," and "...to live your dream no one else's."

These girls are our next generation and we are privileged to help them navigate the middle school years. Visit this web site for announcements of future girl-centered events!
